Description

Unique custom gold-and-platinum lunar relic ring made for Apollo 14 moonwalker Edgar Mitchell

Unique gold-and-platinum ring from the personal collection of Apollo 14 moonwalker Edgar Mitchell, hallmarked "20K & Plat." inside the band, with a presentation inscription engraved inside: "To Edgar D. Mitchell, from David Frohman." The large, heavy ring is approximately size 11.5 and weighs 80 grams, with a flip-up top bezel featuring the emblem of the Masonic Square and Compasses, with "Apollo 14: To Rule the Night" around the edges. The ring opens to reveal lunar relics encased within, derived from Mitchell's retained personal materials flown on the Apollo 14 mission. In fine condition.

After the tragic Apollo 1 fire that claimed the lives of astronauts Ed White, Gus Grissom, and Roger Chaffee, Reverend John Stout—an engineer and chaplain at NASA—established the Apollo Prayer League, dedicated to praying for the safety of the astronauts. Membership quickly swelled to more than 40,000, and out of this effort emerged the ‘Lunar Bible Project,’ whose goal was to place the first complete Bible on the lunar surface, symbolizing both faith and human achievement.

To meet the weight and space restrictions of a lunar mission, the Bible was reproduced in microform, with all 1,245 pages of the King James Version reduced to a tablet scarcely larger than a postage stamp. Attempts to send these microform Bibles on Apollo 12 and Apollo 13 were unsuccessful, but the dream was finally realized on Apollo 14 when LMP Edgar Mitchell carried approximately 300 microform Bibles in his personal preference kit, with 100 traveling down to the lunar surface aboard the Lunar Module Antares. On their return to Earth, many of the flown Lunar Bibles were sliced into 50-page segments for distribution to members of the Apollo Prayer League—the section presented within this ring is one such example.

Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Karlyn Mitchell, the daughter of Edgar Mitchell.
