Description

Very rare original invitation for a ‘surprise’ matinee concert by Prince and the New Power Generation held exclusively for Warner Bros. employees at the company’s studio lot (patio) in Burbank, California, on June 3, 1991. The invitation, 8.5 x 5.75, features splotches of psychedelic paint unique to this particular example and printed purple handwriting, which reads: “Oh my God! 12:00 (on the patio), Don’t come 2 this concert, Oh my God! [backwards] Prince and the N.P.G.” In fine condition, with a strip of tape to the edge and some light edgewear.

From the collection of Marylou Badeaux, a former executive at Warner Bros. Records who worked closely with Prince on a variety of projects. Badeaux notes Warner Bros. employees found these invitations on their desks when they arrived to work on the morning of June 3, 1991. The concert, the first show where Prince was seen playing a yellow Cloud guitar, was also the first to feature a new horn section, which was collectively known as the NPG Hornz. The performance was not a truncated corporate version; per a Warner Bros. newsletter, Prince and the NPG played a full set of 16 songs, including ‘New Power Generation,’ ‘Purple Rain,’ ‘Nothing Compares 2 U,’ ‘Baby I’m a Star,’ and ‘Gett Off.’

From the collection of Marylou Badeaux, a former Warner Bros. Records executive who spent 25 years in the label's R&B and jazz departments and served as Vice President of Special Projects. During her tenure, Badaeux developed a close working relationship with Prince, with whom she closely collaborated for nearly two decades.
