Description

Jerry Garcia inks a deal with Kurt Vonnegut to bring The Sirens of Titan to the silver screen

DS, signed “Jerome J. Garcia” and "Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.," ten pages, 8.5 x 11, January 25, 1985. Document amending the contract for the purchase Vonnegut's rights to Sirens of Titan by Noteworthy Productions, a partnership between Richard Loren, Jerry Garcia, and John Kahn, who intended to produce a motion picture adaptation of the novel. Signed at the conclusion in black ballpoint by Vonnegut, Garcia, Loren, and Kahn. In fine condition.

Kurt Vonnegut’s The Sirens of Titan (1959) is a darkly comic science fiction novel exploring fate, free will, and the absurdity of human purpose. The story follows Malachi Constant, a wealthy and self-assured man who becomes entangled in an interplanetary journey orchestrated by forces beyond his control. Blending satire and cosmic irony, Vonnegut reveals that humanity’s grand struggles may serve a trivial purpose in a vast, indifferent universe.

Vonnegut sold the film rights to Sirens of Titan to The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, who began working with Tom Davis on a screenplay in early December 1983. They finished their first draft in January 1985, but never brought the film to the screen.

Garcia commented on the book and the screenplay in a November 1987 interview: 'There's really three basic characters that are having things happen to them. Three main characters. [Malachi,] Rumfoord, and Bee. It's like a triangle, a complex, convoluted love story. And it's really that simple… So our task has been to take the essential dramatic relationships, make it playable for actors, so that it's free from the Big Picture emphasis of the book. There's also some extremely lovely, touching moments in the book. It's one of the few Vonnegut books that's really sweet, in parts of it, and it has some really lovely stuff in it.'
