Unique partly-printed DS, signed "steven jobs, executor," one page, 4.75 x 4.75, no date but circa mid-1990s. California Department of Motor Vehicles "Notice of Release of Liability" form, partially filled out in blue ballpoint by Steve Jobs for the sale of his father's car. Jobs writes his father's name,"Paul R. Jobs," notes the vehicle's price as "$5,000.00," and signs as the executor of the estate; the vehicle data and seller's address—that of the famous Jobs family home in Los Altos—are filled out in another hand. The document retains its attached carbon copy, which carries an interesting 'ghost' of a second Steve Jobs signature, apparently formed while signing a second document over this one during the settlement of his father's estate. In fine condition.
A machinist, Coast Guard veteran, and used car salesman, Paul Reinhold Jobs (1922-1993) was known for his skill with tools and appreciation of fine craftsmanship, qualities that deeply influenced Steve’s design sensibilities and work ethic. Despite living a modest life—this release documents the sale of an older car—Paul’s steady guidance and hands-on approach helped shape one of the most creative minds in modern technology.
This document originates from the settlement of Paul Jobs's estate in the mid-1990s. Steve Jobs's stepbrother, John Chovanec, recalls: "When we sold Paul’s car to family friends down the street, I presented Steve with the notice of release form that he filled out and signed. When I asked him if he wanted it, he told me to keep it."
