Apple Computer logo ‘Latch-Hook Rug Kit’ sold through Apple’s 1983 Gift Catalog, which described the kit as such: ‘Have hours of enjoyment creating your own latch-hook rug. Everything is included in your kit to produce a 100% polyester and acrylic rug that can also double as a wall-hanging. Imagine the compliments when friends discover that you did all the work!" Includes its original instruction sheet, two latch hooks, canvas, border fabric, and 58 skeins of rug yarn, which includes the following colors: Midnight Blue (4), Deep Purple (5), Bright Red (5), Persimmon (5), Goldenrod (5), Lime Green (5), and White (29). When completed, the tufted rug measures 34.5˝ x 34˝ and prominently features Rob Janoff’s iconic rainbow Apple logo centered against an off-white background. In fine, unused condition. Accompanied by its original cardboard shipping box, which is stamped “Apple Gift Catalog.”
The fabled Apple logo rug was sold in two versions in Apple’s 1983 catalog: a completed ‘wall hanging’ version for $350, and a 'A Latch-Hook Rug Kit' for $75. Their presence in the catalog, however, stemmed from sheer happenstance. Their creator, artist Myra Burg, was asked to make an Apple logo rug as a present for Steve Wozniak, a friend of Burg’s brother. She did, Woz loved it, and so did Steve Jobs, who also requested one.
Jobs liked the final result so much that he approached Burg to make 25 finished tufted rugs (or wall hangings) and to assemble 100 do-it-yourself latch-hook rug kits for the company’s upcoming Apple Gift Catalog. Burg agreed, and despite being a full-time college student, sourced a company to assemble the 100 kits and then personally hand-made all 25 ‘finished’ rugs offered in the catalog. Per the Apple Gift Catalog, the ‘wall hanging’ measured 36˝ x 36˝, and the kit rugs, when completed, approximately measured 34˝ x 34˝.
