Collection of items from a ‘Welcome Home’ ceremony saluting the gold medal-winning U.S. National Hockey Team from the Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympics, held at the Magique Club in New York City on April 29, 1981, which is highlighted by a framed color 10 x 8 photo of the ‘Miracle on Ice’ American hockey roster, affixed to its original presentation mount, which is signed in black ballpoint and felt tip by 19 members of the team: Coach Herb Brooks, Mike Eruzione, Steve Christoff, Rob McClanahan, Eric Strobel, Buzz Schneider, Bill Baker, Mark Wells, Mark Pavelich, Dave Silk, Dave Christian, Phil Verchota, John Harrington, Bob Suter, Neal Broten, Mike Ramsey, and Jack O'Callahan. Also signed by Assistant Coach Craig Patrick and Manager Ralph Jasinski. An unknown hand has added an inscription below to Rodney Hilton Brown, president of Hilton Fine Arts, Ltd., the official fine arts publisher of the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States (AHAUS) and the 1980 Winter Olympics. Patriotically matted and framed with a bronze medallion to an overall size of 22 x 24.5.
The event, which also honored the 1981 U.S. National Hockey Team that recently competed at the 1981 Ice Hockey World Championships in Sweden, included a ceremonial ‘liberation’ of the uniforms of the Russian national hockey team, a presentation of tattered red-and-white knit undergarments purported as having been worn by legendary Russian goalie Vladislav Tretiak’s (No. 20), which are also featured with this lot. The garments include a pair of leggings, a portion of his under jersey numbered “20,” and other fragments attested as having been Olympic-worn by Tretiak, one of hockey’s all-time great goalies who was inducted into the inaugural class of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Hall of Fame in 1997. According to the consignor, this partial uniform, along with others like it, was obtained from the Russian team's locker room immediately after their final game of the Lake Placid Olympics. In overall fine condition.
Other accompaniments include: a bronze Lake Placid 1980 commemorative medal (with case); a vintage red XL “USA Team Hockey” t-shirt; a silkscreen Lake Placid 1980 Games flag; an oversized Lake Placid Olympics glass ‘training mug’; two Cavan Crystal snifter goblets etched with the Lake Placid Games emblem (with case); a bi-fold pamphlet for the ceremony; various Lake Placid and AHAUS-related patches and stickers; an AHAUS neck tie; and a framed certificate presented to Brown by the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics Organizing Committee for his “contribution to the National Fine Arts Committee.”
