Description

Display continuing a 2.5˝ x 1.5 segment of solar cells as used on the Hubble Space Telescope, encased in a block of Lucite with inner text, “Hubble Space Telescope, Returned Solar Cells from SM1.” In fine condition. Servicing Mission 1 (SM1), flown aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-61) in December 1993, was Hubble’s first on-orbit servicing mission. Astronauts conducted five spacewalks to correct the telescope’s flawed optics and replace key components, including installing COSTAR and the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2. The mission transformed Hubble from a troubled observatory into one of the most productive scientific instruments in history.
