Extraordinary pair of lunar-flown biomedical harnesses worn by Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean throughout the full duration of the historic Apollo 12 mission. Both harnesses feature orange wiring, with one measuring 19˝ in length and featuring a yellow multipin connector and two biomedical electrodes, and the other measuring 22.5˝ in length and bearing a blue multipin connector and three biomedical electrodes. The back of one electrode housing has an affixed NASA Manned Spacecraft Center parts label: “1035 / P/N SKB 42100121-202.” In fine condition.
Critical components of the life-monitoring system of the Apollo astronauts, biomedical harnesses were designed to transmit real-time physiological data—including heart rate and other vital signs—from inside the spacesuit to flight surgeons in Mission Control. During launch, lunar descent, extravehicular activity on the Moon’s surface, and reentry, continuous biomedical telemetry allowed NASA to monitor crew health under the extreme stresses of spaceflight. Such data was especially vital during moonwalks, when astronauts were operating in a harsh and unforgiving environment with no immediate possibility of rescue.
Accompanied by a signed and handwritten letter of authenticity from Bean, who writes: “I hereby certify that the accompanying Biomed Harness, with five sensors, was the one I wore on my body during launch, descent to the Ocean of Storms, on both moonwalks, liftoff from the moon to rendezvous with our orbiting command module, and entry back at planet Earth. My Biomed Harness performed flawlessly throughout the Apollo 12 mission, including as I walked, ran and worked on my two moonwalks. This Biomed Harness has been in my personal collection since I returned to Earth.”
