Description

“Flown to the moon on Apollo 13"—Lovell and Haise-signed CSM schematic for the ‘Premodulation Processor,’ a key part of the S-band communication system that carried the crew’s voice to Houston, including their urgent transmissions after the SM's mission-altering oxygen tank explosion

Flown schematic for the Command Module communications system, which was carried into lunar orbit during the historic Apollo 13 mission, signed and flight-certified in black ballpoint, “Flown to the moon on Apollo 13 – Apollo 13 LMP, Fred Haise” and “James Lovell, CDR Apollo 13.” The page, measuring 23.75 ˝ x 10.5˝ unfolded, is marked “4 PREMOD” in the NASA MSC legend to the lower left corner, which bears the correlating tab, “PREMOD PROSS.” Dated to September 1969, the legend reads, in part: “Premodulation Processor / CSM / 108 THRU 111 / Size J / Dwg. No. 6.4 / Sheet 1 of 1.” The schematic presents a detailed block diagram of the Command Module’s Premodulation Processor, illustrating how astronaut voice and onboard telemetry were conditioned and routed through the spacecraft’s S-band communications system. As a critical part of the CSM communications architecture, the Premodulation Processor combined microphone audio, biomedical data, and spacecraft telemetry before transmission to Earth. It was through this system that the crew’s voices — including the historic communications following the oxygen tank explosion — were carried during Apollo 13’s journey to and around the moon. In fine condition.
