Flown Beta cloth patch of the Apollo 17 mission insignia, 7.5 x 6.5, carried into lunar orbit aboard the Command Module America during the final Apollo moon-landing mission, signed in black felt tip, "Harrison H. Schmitt, Apollo 17.” Archivally double-matted and framed with a panoramic EVA photo, an embroidered mission patch, and an engraved plate to an overall size of 29 x 23.5. In fine condition.
Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Moonpans, and by a signed letter of authenticity from Schmitt, who states: “The accompanying Apollo Seventeen Mission Patch printed on Beta-cloth flew to the Moon aboard the Apollo Seventeen Command Module America, December 7-19, 1972. The patch was presented…by the Crew Systems Division, Robert E. Smylie, Chief, by authority granted by Center Director, Christopher Kraft. Attached are images of the official labels on the flight packaging, Part #4065, that included this Beta-cloth patch.” Copies of the parts tags are included, as is a letter from a representative of the Navy League of the United States, New Mexico Council, which partnered up with Schmitt for a 2012 auction that celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 17 mission and raised funds for the Sea Services of the United States in New Mexico. This patch was one of several items donated by Schmitt for the cause.
