Description

Record-setting astronaut Scott Kelly’s twice-launched Russian tool belt that was successfully flown to the International Space Station after its first mission aboard the S.S. Deke Slayton (Cygnus Orb-3) ended in an explosion seconds after liftoff. Kelly ultimately used the tool belt during the 11-month One-Year Mission, which studied the health effects of long-term spaceflight. The blue Beta cloth belt measures 42˝ in length and is accompanied by six attachable storage pockets, one of which contains an additional zippered pouch and extra Velcro. The belt bears a parts label in Russian and English: “Waist Band for Tools / belt / Size M.” Includes the tool belt’s Beta cloth storage bag, which is marked “January 2014, S. Kelly,” and the original melted inventory label that was aboard the S.S. Deke Slayton. In fine condition, with holes to the storage bag.

Accompanied by a printed photo of Kelly holding the storage bag, and a signed letter of authenticity: “This letter certifies that the accompanying Russian 'Waist Band for Tools' is unique in that it was launched twice on the same mission to the International Space Station. The multi-part, size 'M' tool belt was packed with my clothing and other supplies bound for the space station aboard the ‘S.S. Deke Slayton,’ Orbital ATK's Orb-3 Cygnus cargo craft, when the Antares rocket launching it into orbit exploded just seconds into flight on Oct. 29, 2014, at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island in Virginia.

In the aftermath of the accident, the belt was found among the debris and recovered. It later was put on board another spacecraft and successfully made it to me for use during the first year-long mission on the International Space Station. The ‘Waist Band for Tools' assembly was packed in the included pouch, which is marked in part ‘A18 000 00 No. 1253’ and dated ‘January 2014.’ It is also marked with my name, ‘S. Kelly.’ Included in the tool belt's pouch is the original, scorched and melted label that was aboard the Cygnus when it exploded. After its return to Earth, this ‘Waist Band for Tools’ became a memento of my 340 days orbiting the planet.”
