Description

Personal check (National Bank of Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas), 6.25 x 2.75, completed and signed by Gus Grissom, “Virgil I. Grissom,” payable to The Holiday Inn for $37.21, July 25, 1961. The reverse bears an endorsement stamp from the “Holiday Inn Cocoa Beach Development Corp.” In fine condition.

A noteworthy check signed by Grissom on July 25, 1961, just four days after his successful Liberty Bell 7 flight on the Mercury-Redstone 4 mission, which made him the second American to travel into space. After splashdown, Grissom returned to the Cape Canaveral/Cocoa Beach area, where Mercury astronauts were housed for debriefings, medical exams, and press appearances. In the program’s early years, astronauts often paid hotel expenses out of pocket and were later reimbursed by NASA. The date, payee, signature, and hotel endorsement firmly link this check to Grissom’s post–Mercury-Redstone 4 stay.
