A NASA security veteran’s career archive, featuring awards, certificates, and three multi-signed Skylab and Shuttle retirement presentations containing over 70 astronauts

Career archive of Lieutenant Colonel Wilford Paul Hilk (1916–2005), a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and longtime Security Specialist at NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas, where he served for more than 30 years. The archive contains numerous awards, certificates, letters, and photographs documenting Hilk’s distinguished military and NASA careers, highlighted by three oversized official NASA photographs signed by over 70 Skylab and Space Shuttle astronauts and presented to him upon his retirement.

Color semi-glossy 10.75 x 13.75 NASA photo of a dramatic Space Shuttle launch, affixed to its original 16 x 20 presentation mount that is signed in ink and felt tip by 65 astronauts and NASA personnel, including: Alan Bean, John Young, Fred Haise, Ken Mattingly, Ron McNair, Judy Resnik, Bob Crippen, Joe Kerwin, Owen Garriott, Charles Bolden, Hank Hartsfield, John Blaha, Karl G. Henize, Hoot Gibson, Dan Brandenstein, Dick Covey, Karol J. Bobko, William E. Thornton, Joe Allen, Bob Overmyer, Tony England, Story Musgrave, Paul Weitz, Joe Engle, Jack Lousma, and more, with Lousma adding an inscription above: “To Paul Hilk – Congratulations upon your well deserved retirement. Many thanks to your support over the years and please stay in touch. With our best wishes!”

Color semi-glossy 13.75 x 10.75 NASA photo of Skylab in lower Earth orbit, affixed to its original 20 x 16 presentation mount, which is signed in black ink by the astronauts from all three manned Skylab missions: Paul Weitz, Charles Conrad, and Joe Kerwin of Skylab 2; Alan Bean, Jack Lousma, and Owen Garriott of Skylab 3; and Jerry Carr, Ed Gibson, and Bill Pogue of Skylab 4. One of the astronauts has added an inscription below: “To Paul Hilk with appreciation for your outstanding support.”

Color semi-glossy 9.5 x 7 NASA photo of the two-man crew of the STS-1 mission, affixed to its original 14 x 11 presentation mount, which is signed in black felt tip by John Young and Bob Crippen. An inscription above reads: “To Paul Hilk, with sincere appreciation for all your security support. Best wishes and good luck upon your very deserved retirement - The Crew of Columbia.”

Additionally, the archive contains numerous honorary awards and certificates presented to Hilk throughout his life, including official NASA commendations such as his 20-Year and 30-Year NASA Service Awards; Group Achievement Awards for the “Lunar Landing Team” and “Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center”; a Quality Increase Award; two Suggestion Awards; a Skylab Achievement Award; a Skylab Award with Manned Flight Awareness medallion; an ASTP Award; an ASTP Honoree Award; and an ALT Award; signatures are all preprinted facsimiles. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by sundry NASA stickers and photographs, and numerous additional certificates and commendations presented to Hilk by military, institutional, and religious organizations.
