Description

“Flown to the Moon, Alan L. Bean, Apollo XII, Nov '69"

Flown printed UN Space Treaty that was carried to the moon during the Apollo 12 mission, 5.25 x 3, signed and flight-certified in black ink, “Flown to the Moon, Alan L. Bean, Apollo XII, Nov '69.” The treaty, entitled “Treaty of the Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, Including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies,” is attractively double-matted and framed with an engraved plate and an Apollo 12 Beta cloth mission patch to an overall size of 11 x 16.75. In fine condition. From the personal collection of Apollo 12 moonwalker Alan Bean, and accompanied by a letter of provenance from his daughter.

The Outer Space Treaty (1967) establishes that space is free for all nations to explore and cannot be claimed by any one country, while requiring that it be used for peaceful purposes. It also holds countries responsible for their activities in space, including those of private companies, and prohibits placing weapons of mass destruction in orbit or on celestial bodies. It remains in force today as the foundational legal framework governing international space activity.
