Flown ring-bound "Proximity Ops" checklist carried and used aboard Space Shuttle Challenger on STS-7, 8.75 x 10.5, signed and flight-certified on the protective plastic cover in black felt tip, "Flown on STS-7 and used during SPAS-01 free flight release & capture—1st satellite deployed and retrieved by Space Shuttle, John Fabian, MS-1." The checklist is notationally dense, with numerous contemporaneous mission notes made during the deployment of the first satellite from the Shuttle via the Canadarm.
When the Space Shuttle was designed, one of its primary goals was to make the launch and servicing of satellites more cost-effective by allowing astronauts to deploy and retrieve payloads directly from orbit. STS-7 marked the first full demonstration of this capability using the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (Canadarm). During the mission, the crew successfully launched and later retrieved the first Shuttle pallet satellite (SPAS-1), showcasing the Shuttle’s ability to both place satellites into orbit and recover them for inspection. The crew also deployed two commercial communications satellites.
The checklist retains its original "Proximity Ops" cloth binding and three Velcro swatches affixed to the rear cover. In fine condition. Complete flown Shuttle checklists are becoming increasingly scarce as they, like many of the Apollo checklists, continue to get broken up and sold by the page.
The Richard Jurek Collection.
