Description

Flown enameled 1˝-long "Houston 2012" Olympic bid pin carried on the Space Shuttle Atlantis during STS-101, encased in a 5.25˝ x 5.25˝ x 1˝ Lucite block, along with a color copy of a NASA-issued certificate: "Presented to Houston 2012 Foundation. These Small Olympic Lapel Pins were flown aboard the United States Space Shuttle Atlantis, on its successful mission to service and supply the International Space Station, STS-101, May 19–29, 2000. Launching from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, Atlantis completed 155 Earth orbits, traveling 4.1 million miles before landing on Runway 15 at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida." In fine condition.

These pins were flown on Atlantis, and embedded in Lucite, to raise support for the Foundation in its efforts to host the 2012 Summer Olympics in Houston. Houston was a finalist for the bid, but lost out to New York City, which lost to London.
