Flown Series 1917 large-size two-dollar bill, serial number D82207287A, carried aboard the Mercury-Atlas 9 Faith 7 spacecraft for the last crewed U.S. solo orbital flight on May 15–16, 1963, signed and flight-certified in black ballpoint by the pilot, "Flown on Faith 7, Gordon Cooper." Encapsulated and graded by PMG as "Very Fine 30," with the label noting the provenance: "Ex. Leroy Gordon Cooper / Flown Aboard Mercury Faith 7, 1963 / Jefferson Space Museum Collection."
The note was neatly folded into eighths and tucked into the pocket of Cooper's space suit during the historic flight. Accompanied by Cooper's own annotated envelope, "This old 1917 issue $2 bill was flown by me in my flight suit pocket on MA9, Gordon Cooper." This is the only $2 bill known to have been carried on Mercury-Atlas 9, and the only large-format 'horse blanket' bill known to have flown on any of the Mercury, Gemini, or Apollo flights.
The Richard Jurek Collection.
