Description

Gene Cernan's unflown 'good luck' Series 1976 two-dollar bill, serial number K34040012A, carried with him inside his wallet throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Annotated on the portrait side in black ballpoint by Cernan, "Geno 'Lovey.'" In poor condition, with obvious heavy use. Accompanied by a letter of provenance signed by Cernan, in full: "This letter is to certify that the accompanying US $2 bill, United States Note, series 1976, bearing serial number K34040012A, and with considerable wear and tear is one of the 'good luck' two dollar bills that I carried with me in my wallet during my travels in the late 1970's and early 1980's. This bill accompanied me where-ever I went, tucked within my wallet. While it never flew with me in space, it was, indeed, one of my personal post-astronaut-career lucky charms!" This well-worn and travel-weary $2 bill held special meaning for Gene Cernan. In tribute to his father’s habit of always carrying a $2 bill in his wallet for good luck, Cernan adopted the same tradition, always keeping one with him as a personal token of fortune.

The Richard Jurek Collection.
