Description

Extremely rare dollar bill flown on the Apollo 13 CM 'Odyssey,' signed by Lovell, Haise, Swigert, and Mattingly

Extremely rare flown Series 1963A one-dollar bill, serial number K87191445C, carried on the Apollo 13 Command Module 'Odyssey,' signed on the portrait side in black felt tip by the crew as flown—James Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert—as well as by the original CMP, Ken Mattingly, who was bumped from the flight at the last minute because of his exposure to the German measles. In very fine condition. Very few Apollo 13 flown items signed by all four prime crew members exist in private collections.

Accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from NASA Crew Equipment Station Engineer Ray C. Malone, who was responsible for packing and stowing all the flight crew equipment on the Command Module. In full: "I hereby certify that this US one-dollar bill S/N K87191445C was flown to the moon on the Apollo 13 Command Module which launched on the 11th of April and returned the 17th of April, 1970.

During the historic mission to the moon, this one-dollar bill was carried by the crew in PPK S/N 1110 on my behalf and has remained in my possession since its return from the moon.

This bill, along with 12 others, was signed by the Apollo 13 astronauts James Lovell, John L. Swigert, Jr., Fred Haise and Ken Mattingly at the final bench review prior to being stowed on the spacecraft. It is the only flown one-dollar bill of the set that Swigert signed with his formal full name of 'John L. Swigert' instead of the more familiar 'Jack Swigert.'

I was the NASA Crew Equipment Station Engineer assigned to the Flight Crew Support Team at KSC providing Flight Crew Directorate Representative (FCDR) support for the command module at the time. In addition to my FCDR duties, I was also responsible for packing and stowing all the flight crew equipment.

My Boeing Crew Equipment Engineer carefully packed this bill along with 12 other crew signed US one-dollar bills, one unsigned US one dollar bill, one Oklahoma state flag, and six small US flags on my behalf. These items were stowed in the CM under my name where they remained throughout the mission. After this historic flight, this bill and the other items were returned to me by the Apollo 13 crew. This bill has been in my personal astronaut collection since that time."

Also includes an original vintage glossy 8 x 10 NASA press photo showing Ray Malone with an assistant atop Launch Complex 39A, examining items that were to be stored aboard the Apollo 15 spacecraft prior to launch—illustrating his role at each of the Apollo launches.

The Richard Jurek Collection.
