Description

Oversized ‘Earthrise’ NASA photograph signed by Apollo 8 and presented to fellow astronaut Stuart A. Roosa, complemented by a rare Artemis II patch and crew-signed letter given to Roosa’s daughter

Two scarce items honoring past and future crews of lunar spaceflight:

Large official color semi-glossy 19.75 x 15 NASA photo of the famed ‘Earthrise’ photograph taken during the historic Apollo 8 mission, affixed to its original presentation mount that is signed and inscribed in felt tip, “To Stu – with appreciation for your help in making this picture possible, Frank Borman,” “James Lovell” and “Bill Anders.” Framed sans glass to an overall size of 26.25 x 22.25.

Includes an official embroidered mission patch for Artemis II, NASA’s first crewed Orion flight and the first human mission to the moon’s vicinity since Apollo 17 in 1972. The patch, 4˝ x 4.25˝, which bears a numbered A-B Emblem label on the reverse, is accompanied by a typed transmittal letter signed by the four-person crew: Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen.

The letter, which is addressed to Rosemary Roosa, the daughter of Apollo 14 CMP Stuart Roosa, reads, in full: “We write with great respect and gratitude as the crew of Artemis II. While we prepare for this historic journey, we are continually reminded of the legacy upon which we build. The courage and spirit of discovery that you, your crew, and the wider team embodied still resonate today. The Artemis campaign echoes many accomplishments of the Apollo era, and in doing so, draws strength and inspiration from that time.

One particular image came to represent an important part Apollo campaign: ‘Earthrise.’ Capturing both the fragility and unity of our planet, it changed the way the world saw itself and inspired several of us individually. That same Earth as seen in the original photo from Apollo 8 now appears on the Artemis II mission patch. This design choice was intentional and deeply meaningful to us. It symbolizes the continuum of exploration and honoring the era that first revealed our home to us from afar. We stand on your shoulders as we move forward into this new era of lunar exploration. We humbly offer that the bravery and legacy of your mission are forever a part of Artemis II. Thank you for leading the way.” In overall fine condition, with uniform light overall fading, faint crazing, and a few areas of surface loss to lower left of photo. Accompanied by two letters of authenticity from Rosemary D. Roosa, the daughter of Apollo 14 CMP Stuart A. Roosa.
