Description

Apollo Command Module In-Flight Coverall Garment (ICG) trousers designed for astronaut Michael Collins, with tag sewn inside the waistband reading: "Coverall, Trousers, BW-1061-001, Size: M.R. S/N: 1116, Subject: Collins, Contract No. NAS 9-8309, Date of Mfg.: 3-4-69, Mfg. By: B. Welson Co." The trousers feature a snap-adjustable elastic waistband with double-snap closure, zippered fly, and large cargo pockets toward the ankles. In fine condition, with light wear.

NASA developed the In-Flight Coverall Garment (ICG) to provide astronauts with a lighter, more flexible alternative to the bulky spacesuit worn during launch and reentry. Once safely in orbit, astronauts often changed into these garments to remain comfortable during the long translunar flights of the Apollo missions. This ICG jacket was manufactured for Michael Collins for his role as Command Module Pilot for Apollo 11, and was likely used as a training or as a test article during mission preparation.

As CMP of Apollo 11, Collins piloted the Command Module Columbia and remained in lunar orbit while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the surface in the Lunar Module Eagle. During the landing phase of the mission, Collins orbited the Moon alone for more than 21 hours, maintaining the spacecraft and preparing for the critical rendezvous and docking that reunited the crew in lunar orbit before their return to Earth.
