Description

Apollo 16 ‘Lion Brothers’ crew patch attested as flown by a NASA Manned Flight Awareness Coordinator

Embroidered Apollo 16 ‘Lion Brothers’ crew patch attested as flown during the penultimate Apollo lunar-landing mission, 4.25˝ in diameter, which bears a distinctive red border along the bottom of the shield, and the number "16" is embroidered upside down in the grey background at center right as a hallmark. In fine condition.

Accompanied by a copy of a letter of authenticity from D. Kent Evans, a NASA Manned Flight Awareness Coordinator for McDonnell Douglas from 1968 through 1974, who states that the patch, along with several others, was “personally presented to me by the astronauts after each mission.”

D. Kent Evans (1940–2012) was an aerospace professional who worked with major NASA contractors during the early years of the American space program. After beginning his career as a social worker and establishing several health care centers in Brevard County, Florida, he joined aerospace firms, including McDonnell-Douglas, North American Rockwell, and Lockheed at Cape Canaveral. Serving as a liaison between contractors and astronauts during the development of crewed spaceflight programs, Evans received the NASA Silver Snoopy Award, an honor personally presented by astronauts for outstanding contributions to flight safety and mission success. In 1975, he moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he worked at NASA’s White Sands Test Facility before spending two decades in human resources at New Mexico State University’s Physical Science Laboratory.
