Joseph G. Gavin, Jr. (1920–2010) was an American aerospace engineer who led the development of the Apollo program’s Lunar Module at Grumman. As director of the program, he oversaw a team of 7,500 that enabled the module’s first Moon landing at the Sea of Tranquility on July 20, 1969, and played a key role in saving the Apollo 13 mission. Gavin later directed development of the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory and served as president, COO, and chairman of Grumman’s executive committee. He received NASA’s Distinguished Public Service Medal in 1971 and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1974. Neil Armstrong described him as a ‘highly regarded aerospace engineer.’
