Description

Official NASA manual entitled “Apollo Operations Handbook, Block II Spacecraft, Volume 1 Spacecraft Description,” (Contract NAS 9-150, Exhibit I, Paragraph 10.3), prepared under the direction of the Spacecraft Systems Branch / Flight Crew Support Division. The manual, 8˝ x 10.5˝ (2.5˝ thick), dated October 15, 1969 (changed), is signed and inscribed on the title page in black felt tip by aerospace engineers John Houbolt and Aaron Cohen.

The manual contains three main sections—Spacecraft, Systems Data, and Controls and Displays—and includes two appendices for Symbols and Definitions and Alphabetical Index. Housed in a three-ring binder. In very good to fine condition, with light stains and binder hole tears to the signed title page, with scattered creases and edgewear to some of the opening and closing pages.

A dense, early NASA manual related to the Block II Command and Service Module (CSM)—the functional ‘mothership’ of the Apollo Program’s lunar missions—signed by two pivotal figures of the era. John Houbolt (1919-2014) was the Langley engineer who championed the lunar-orbit rendezvous concept that ultimately made the Apollo lunar landings feasible, while Aaron Cohen (1931-2010) served as manager of the Apollo Spacecraft Program Office at NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center, overseeing development of the command and service modules during the height of the program.
