Description

Official stapled final ‘Flight Data File, Crew Activity Plan’ (JSC-18333) for the STS-7 mission, issued for “Cycle 3 Trajectory,” signed on the front cover in black ink by Sally Ride and in black felt tip by Rick Hauck, who served as Mission Specialist 2 and Pilot, respectively. Prepared by the Mission Operations Directorate (Operations Division) and released on April 28, 1983, the manual, approximately 120 pages, 8.5 x 11, includes the following sections: Timeline Format Symbol Nomenclature, STS-7 Overview, Summary Timeline, Detailed Timeline, Contingency Timelines, Consumables Curves, Crew Activity Plan Notes, and Detailed Test Objectives. In fine condition.

STS-7, launched aboard Space Shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983, is best remembered for carrying Sally Ride, the first American woman to travel into space. Ride served as a mission specialist, selected partly for her expertise with the shuttle’s Remote Manipulator System (Canadarm), which she used to help deploy and later retrieve payloads during the mission. The six-day flight’s primary objectives included deploying two communications satellites—Anik C-2 for Canada and Palapa B-1 for Indonesia—and conducting scientific experiments aboard the German-built SPAS-1 satellite, which Ride operated with the robotic arm before bringing it back to the shuttle. The mission also marked several milestones, including the first five-person shuttle crew and the first shuttle mission to photograph the orbiter in space using a free-flying payload.
