Description

Diverse collection of 23 NASA and space exploration-related posters and maps, ranging in size from 14 x 11 to 39.5 x 28.5, dating primarily from the 1960s through the 1980s. Highlights include a large 1966 General Electric educational poster titled “Apollo Design, Reference Mission IIA,” illustrating the architecture of a lunar mission with detailed diagrams of spacecraft components, orbital paths, and mission data. Also included are several first-edition Space Shuttle Mercator orbit maps (STS-51-F, STS-51-L, and STS-61-A) produced by the Defense Mapping Agency Aerospace Center, as well as multiple NASA engineering drawing sheets and promotional posters related to the proposed Space Station Freedom program. Additional items feature commemorative and promotional graphics such as the Spaceweek ’89 poster, a McDonnell Douglas “NASA Space Travelers” mission history poster, and three Apollo posters reproducing signatures from flown negatives carried during Apollo 9, 11, and 12.

The collection further includes lunar cartography and mission planning materials, such as early-1960s Lunar Aeronautical Charts (LAC 76 and 77), a USAF Lunar Reference Mosaic (1967), a 3-D perspective map of the Apollo 16 Descartes landing site, and several Fra Mauro-related landing site maps and EVA planning posters from 1970. Other pieces include a Lockheed Space Station Freedom promotional poster, a SPAS-01A Shuttle Pallet Satellite poster, and various NASA technical and topographic charts.

Also included is NASA Picture Set, Portfolio No. 3, entitled ‘NASA Space Art, Eyewitness to Space,’ containing 12 color oversized official NASA lithographs, 20 x 16 and 16 x 20, containing space-related artwork by artists like James Wyeth, Peter Hurd, Mitchell Jamieson (2), George A. Weymouth, Billy Morrow Jackson, Paul Calle, Lamar Dodd, Hugh Laidman, Franklin McMahon, Nicholas Solovioff, and Fred Freeman. Includes the original ‘United States Government Printing Office’ envelope.

All of the posters/charts/maps are rolled and in overall very good to fine condition, with issues such as bends, stains, edgewear, scattered creases, and paper loss.
