Description

"Good morning, dear cretin of Valois"—George Sand writes to Franz Liszt, referring to Chopin and Berlioz

Unsigned handwritten letter in French by George Sand, one page, 5 x 8, blindstamped "G.S." personal letterhead, [January 2, 1838]. Handwritten letter to Franz Liszt and Marie d'Agoult, referring to herself as "Piffoel," Chopin as "Sopin," and Liszt as a "cretin." in part (translated): "Good evening, good and charming princess, Good morning, dear cretin of Valois. Don't forget Piffoel, who lays at your feet his heart, his cigar, and the salvaged remnants of his scarlet dressing gown. Piffoel may go to Paris at the end of January. Everywhere, if they celebrate a second time, as the newspapers have announced, Berlioz's mass. Piffoel will warmly shake Sopin's hand because of the cretin, and also because of Sopin, because Sopin is very kind. Piffoel begs fellows not to read Dernier Aldini, but to read his next work, which is much better and not yet finished. Piffoel presses you into his arms and begs you to love him, after you each other, if there is any left." In fine condition.

George Sand and Franz Liszt met in the autumn of 1834, introduced by Musset. The affair between the poet and the novelist was coming to an end, while Liszt was in the throes of passion for Marie d'Agoult. Between George Sand and Franz Liszt began a subtle relationship, 'a happy medium between love and friendship,' as the novelist wrote. These ambiguous relations, which generated much discussion, tormented Marie d'Agout, who felt a mixture of friendship and jealousy for Sand.
