American sculptor (1898–1976) known as the originator of the mobile. Hand-addressed off-white mailing envelope, 9.75 x 4.5, addressed in Alexander Calder's hand to a notable German-Jewish art dealer, "Curt Valentin, 32 E. 57 Street, New York City," postmarked at Roxbury, Connecticut. Calder imaginatively transforms the "C" in "Curt" into an elaborate sketch of a face in profile, coloring in the nose with colored pencil. Stamped on the left side with his address on Painter Hill Road. In fine condition.
